CTIRS Lecture Focuses on Sustainable Rural Tourism in Mainland China

On April 25, 2025, the Centre of Tourism and Integrated Resort Studies (CTIRS) at the Faculty of Business Administration hosted a guest lecture on revitalizing rural tourism in Mainland China for students in the Department of Integrated Resort and Tourism Management.

The lecture was led by Prof. Zhuowei Huang, an Associate Professor and Ph.D. Supervisor at Sun Yat-sen University’s School of Tourism Management. Prof. Huang presented a framework for understanding rural tourism placemaking in China’s unique “desakota” villages – areas blending rural and urban characteristics. The discussion explored three key approaches to placemaking and the importance of balanced power dynamics between tourists, local villagers, and property owners.

Participants particularly appreciated insights into how co-creation can transform spaces into meaningful and mutually beneficial destinations.

Established in 2018, CTIRS supports the Macao SAR Government’s vision of establishing Macao as a leading tourism and leisure hub within the Greater Bay Area (GBA). With support from the Central Government of China, CTIRS is expanding its research and collaboration to meet the evolving needs of the regional tourism industry.
